FAQs
Credit Cards — what people ask
What credit score do I need for a top rewards card?
Sapphire Preferred, Amex Blue Cash Preferred, and Discover it Cash Back typically require a 690+ FICO. Some Capital One and Discover cards approve down to 580.
How does a balance transfer work?
You move existing card debt to a new card with a 0% intro APR (usually 15–21 months). You pay a one-time transfer fee (3–5%) but no interest during the intro window. Pay it off before the intro ends or APR jumps to standard.
Will applying for a card hurt my credit?
Each application is a hard pull (~5 point dip, recovers in 3 months). Multiple applications in a short window compound the impact. Pre-qualify first using soft-pull tools to filter out likely denials.
Annual fee — is it ever worth it?
Yes, if the rewards rate beats the fee. A $95 Sapphire Preferred earning 5x on travel pays for itself with $1,900/yr in travel spend (if redeemed at 1.25 cents per point through the portal).
What's an APR I should never accept?
Anything above ~30% is high. If your only options are 30%+ cards, focus on a credit-builder secured card first, then upgrade in 6–12 months.
